Marion J. Ewing was born in Pioche, Lincoln County, Nevada, August 24th, 1895. He attended the public schools in Pioche, during which time he became universally known and respected in the community. While in school he took a correspondence course in mechanical and electrical engineering, and at the time of entering the army was serving as mechanic at the Pioche Amalgamated Mines. Early in the war Marion made an attempt to enter the service, being one of the first two in Lincoln County to volunteer, but he was rejected at San Francisco on account of a weak heart. In September (1917) he was called in the draft, but again rejected, and it was not until the 29th of June, 1918, that he succeeded in entering the service. In the meantime he was married to Miss Isabell Nesbitt, daughter of the late James Nesbitt, Sheriff of Lincoln County, (December 10, 1917) He was sent first to Tucson, Arizona, to the Training Detachment, University of Arizona.

Later he was transferred to Montgomery, Alabama. On October 2d he contracted pneumonia, and on the 8th passed away at Camp Sheridan, Alabama. His body was sent home to Pioche where he was buried with military honors on October 17th, 1918. His widow, Mrs. Isabell Ewing, his parents, John and Jessie Ewing, both natives of Pioche, and three brothers, Oliver, Alva, and Vivian, all of Pioche, Nevada, survive him. In him the County of Lincoln gave to the Nation a son who had endeavored from the beginning to serve her, and who at last lay down his life for her with all the devotion of a free born spirit.
